SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Governor Paterson is addressing concerns over the fate of this year's meet at the Saratoga Race Course. As of now, there is no operator to run VLTs at Aqueduct.
Last week, the governor's office dropped support for the Aqueduct Entertainment Group to build and operate video lottery terminals at the Aqueduct racetrack in Queens. Additionally, the New York City OTB has disclosed that it is on the verge on bankruptcy.
Some suggested that racing at Saratoga could be in jeopardy as a result of potential lost revenue from both VLTs and off-track betting.
Even so, Governor Paterson said the problems facing the industry and the state are unlikely to impact racing at the Spa City.
"We wouldn't project that the Saratoga racing season is in jeopardy at this point. That may have been a bit rash. But there the basic notion that the racing association was suffering. The racing association was suffering prior to this recession and has not fared well in it at all," Paterson said.
While officials from NYRA also say it's unlikely the state's finances will threaten the meet at Saratoga, they have expressed concerns over the lost revenue.
