SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The morning after being arrested by Saratoga Police, Travis Carroll, 23, was arraigned in Saratoga City Court, where he entered a not guilty plea to two counts.
"He's been charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a Class D felony, and tampering with evidence, a Class E felony," Saratoga Springs Police Chief Chris Cole said.
Police claim early last Thursday morning, Carroll drove his 2002 Nissan Maxima out of a parking lot near the intersection of Phila and Henry streets and struck Ryan Rossley, 27, who later died at the hospital. Police believe Carroll then went home without reporting the incident.
"Mr. Carroll then went to his residence where he removed a portion of the windshield in an effort to conceal it from being located," Cole said.
After interviewing roughly 70 witnesses, police determined the incident started during an altercation between the two men and their parties.
Carroll's attorney claims his client was severely beaten and acted in self defense, quickly trying to escape in fear of his life.
"His body is covered with bruises," Gerard Amedio said. "I had the police department document his injuries, you can actually see a belt buckle image on the back of his back from where he was beaten."
Because Carroll was arrested more than 24 hours after allegedly striking Rossley with his car, police are unsure whether he was legally drunk at the time.
As the investigation continues, officers say it's possible further charges, such as vehicular manslaughter, could be brought against Carroll.
"Unfortunately, we had one person lose their life," Cole said. "This has affected many, many people and we want to make sure we have all our Ts crossed and Is dotted before we move forward."
With the two charges brought against him now, Carroll faces up to 11 years in prison.
His next appearance in court is scheduled for April 13th.
