SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- "I have today placed Chief Cole on administrative leave with pay until further notice and I've commenced further investigation into this matter," said Public Safety Commissioner Richard Wirth.

That's the news Monday, four days after Saratoga Springs Police Chief Christopher Cole admitted to sending sexually explicit photos and texts to his 39-year-old girlfriend whom he named Laurie Masi, from his personal phone, one while at work.

"I think it's best for the individual. I think it's best for the department. And I had act accordingly in my mind and that was the decision I made," Wirth said.

Wirth says Captain Michael Chowske will assume responsibility in Cole's stead.

"I have the utmost respect for Captain Chowske. Has been and will do a fine job. There is no timeline," Wirth said.

Wirth says he, on behalf of city officials and police is doing what he has to do and offered no details into the content of the messages or details of the investigation. Wirth says no one from the alleged victim's attorney had contacted him, but her attorney tells YNN, "Mr. Cole's decision to broadcast my client's identity has caused her significant stress...my client does not seek vengeance but she does seek justice."

Wirth says whatever the investigation determines, the incident will not tarnish the department as a whole.

"The moral is ok, I'm sure they'll be understanding. I'll be meeting with each shift, along with Captain Chowske, continue to protect and serve," Wirth said.

Wirth says only at the conclusion of the investigation will he decide what action to take regarding Cole, be it suspension, termination or continued administrative leave.
