SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- “The fight started down there, and there were cops lined up all the way up the street,” said Chris Biddle, Esperanto's manager.

The police presence was to combat a brawl that police say started here in Club Shadow late Saturday night and flooded onto Caroline Street.

"Initially there were 15 to 30 people when it started inside. When it spilled out into the street there were hundreds of people still on the street at that time and as what the officers were saying there were up to 40 people engaged in fighting and disorderly behavior,” said Lt. Greg Veitch.

Ultimately five were arrested and four officers injured, one of whom has yet to return to work.

"Track season is a month away but Saratoga Springs, it starts to get busy as soon as the weather breaks and by now we've started to see an increase in crowds,” said Veitch.

And there has been an increase in patrols as a result. City police called in help from state, sheriff and Ballston Spa departments that night, but local business owners say they notice a difference on a nightly basis.

"They have a constant police presence now and it's curtailed a lot of the fights especially on the upper part of the street. The lower half is generally more where the larger fights happen,” said Biddle.

That's Club Shadow territory, a spot police say is problem prone.

"On Friday night, the State Liquor Authority was up here and we did a joint investigation. As a result of that, one of the bar employees was arrested for possessing cocaine,” said Veitch.

But Caroline Street business owners say a problem-spot isn't a fair reflection of city nightlife as a whole and hope that Saturday's incident isn't writing on the wall.
