A Fulton County city is going to start seeing a lot more of their police force on the streets. As our Maria Valvanis tells us, a new chief is planning to bring back some old school ways.

GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. –Twenty-two-year Gloversville Police Department veteran Donald VanDeusen is starting to get used to a new office and a new title.

Appointed to Police Chief Tuesday night by a unanimous decision, VanDeusen finds himself thanking his sister, who got him involved with the force back in 1988 without even meaning to.

“She wanted to take the test, but she didn't want to go by herself, so she talked me into signing up and taking the test,” VanDeusen said.

And the rest is history. VanDeusen was hired by the Gloversville Police Department in1990 as a patrolman and from there, worked his way all the way up to the boss’ chair.

“It still hasn't completely sunk in yet because it's new. And it’s not something that I would have thought 22 years ago was going to take place,” VanDeusen said.

Regardless, VanDeusen already has big plans in the works for the city, focusing on quality of life issues and making the police force more visible to its residents.

VanDeusen said, “I think people need to feel safe in the downtown and we want them to come back downtown. Any city you have, downtown is your heart and soul.”

Which is why one of the first things the chief wants to do is start stationing some of his men at a booth downtown. It’s located right downtown and grants the police department a closer look at whets going on in the hub of their city.

“It's kind of like seeing a police car. You don't know if someone's in there or not. This is kind of just another tool we can use to keep people on their toes,” VanDeusen said.

Which, in turn, he hopes will help keep the city safe.
