Mosquitoes can be a nuisance to summer fun, but they can also but a health hazard. YNN's Casey Bortnick tells us more.
Just the sound is enough to make a warm summer night unbearable. Tired of being driven inside, Anne Cormier decided it was time to take action. She called the mosquito squad.
"This year it happens to be really bad because we had a very mild winter," explained Joe Koval, Mosquito Squad. Koval brought the franchise to Upstate New York this year and said the business is already booming.
More mosquitos aren't just an annoyance, they can cause a public health problem. The West Nile Virus started to show up in Upstate New York in the late nineties. Spread by mosquitos, West Nile can be anything from flu-like symptoms, to something more serious. Doctors say that it is hard to track.
"For every five infections, only one is clinically significant. So, only one in every five patients actually feel symptoms," said Dr. Alexandra Yamshchikov, infectious disease specialist.
Before you call the mosquito squad, there are some simple things you can do around your home to keep mosquitos under control. Experts refer to them at the five T's.
"Tilt anything in your yard that's going to collect water, toss any old leaves or grass clippings," suggested Koval. "Detarp. Tarps are a big collector of water on the top."
If the first few options don't work, than Koval suggests to treat. The mosquito squad uses two different kinds of repellent, a traditional, and an all-natural product.
The compound irritates the mosquito's strong sense of smell. One treatment can keep mosquitoes away for as long as three weeks.
Koval said, "Our products are 85-90 percent effective."
At $49 per half acre, that is money well spent.
