NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- A crowd of people wearing black and red took part in a flash mob in Newburgh. It's part of an event put on by "One Billion Rising" and "4 WOMEN’S JUSTICE," both groups dedicated to ending violence against women. They say one in three women in the world is raped or beaten in her lifetime, and they're looking to curb this startling statistic.

One woman says it is important to be a voice for all women, especially her daughter, Alexis Harris, who was killed in a domestic violence incident.

"I never gave up on her in life and I never will in death. I have to be her voice because she is not here. We need to be more proactive. There is so much that needs to be done. Everyone needs to get involved," said Anne Harris, the victim’s mother.

Organizers say more than 200 countries have taken part in events trying to end violence against women.
